5 Things to Expect During a Family Photography Session
Over the years I have had the privilege of meeting and working with families to capture memories for them. During some of these sessions I noticed some trends that I want to talk about. A lot of families have very high expectations when their annual family photos come around, which is totally normal and okay, however it can create some stress. So I wanted to go over a few things to ease the stress of family photos and to ensure you have fun during this special time.
Things may not go according to plan.
Before you go to your scheduled family photoshoot, you may have this perfect scenario baked out that you and your kiddos are all going to smile and look at the camera and look like the perfect family. I will be the first to tell you that this never happens. If it does, I haven’t had it happen yet, and that’s okay! This is what makes families unique and full of personality. You may also get some awesome candids of brothers being brothers, which can sometimes be much more meaningful than them sitting perfectly in front of the camera.
2. Your photos won’t look exactly like what you see on Pinterest.
This is continued from #1. Most moms will scour Pinterest for hours looking for the perfect family shot that they want to copy exactly. The problem with that is lighting will be different, the photographer is different and the models are different. Everything is different and the odds of getting that exact photo are slim to none. Pinterest is a wonderful tool however for clothing inspiration and pose ideas, just don’t expect your photographer to match exactly what you show them on your phone. This is what makes your session unique.
3. Sometimes you have to have a snack break.
If your kiddos are under the age of five, you will want to bring snacks. Heck, sometimes the adults need the snack. A snack is a great way to reset and to get your kiddos’ heads back in the game. Sometimes those Goldfish or lollipop may make an appearance in a photo or two, and that’s okay, as long as no one goes hangry.
4. Candids are the best!
Everyone wants that perfectly posed photo. The odds of everyone looking at the camera without anyone behind the photographer helping, are low; however not impossible of course. This is when candid photos come in to play. They show your family’s personality and the photographer may catch some super sweet moments that you aren’t aware of that you may love more than that posed photo you were wanting.
5. You will have fun!
No matter what, this is a bonding experience for your family. You will get some super sweet moments on “film” that you will treasure forever. Go into the session calm and ready to have some fun and to be silly!
